It was founded in Great Britain in 1946. Mensa currently boasts about 100,000 members in over 100 countries, organized into 41 national groups.

In Mensa, members can meet other stimulating members, join one of the over 140 special interest groups, and attend local, national, and international events. Mensa encourages and supports programs for gifted children, sponsors research into the nature of intelligence and awards thousands of dollars in scholarships each year.
